Serenity gasped as the door opened, and she quickly hurried into a closet. She hadn't realized that the house belonged to anybody, and she'd been bored at home, so her mother had told her to "Get the heck out of here before I strangle ya," and Serenity had done as her mother had wanted her to. She always tried to please her mother because of the fact that she was so unpredictable with her moods. "A real right loony" her father's best friend had called her. He'd gotten punched in the face for that.
Serenity held her breath, worried as she heard footsteps; she wondered if they were leaving or coming? She didn't know, but she didn't want her mother to try calling for her out in the street, that would be worse. So, very slowly, she opened the door of the closet, and just waited, a bit worried about whether she would be seen or not- basically she was damned if she left, damned if she didn't.
